Vanessa has been running a Virtual Assistant Services business and lifestyle management service in West Sussex since 2015. Prior to that she was a tutor in Offender Learning teaching Employability Skills and ESOL, taught long-term unemployed adults Literacy & Numeracy, delivered Business English courses to companies in Germany and was Training Manager in the Telecommunications industry.
Having worked as an Employability and ESOL Tutor in Offender Learning for three years, Vanessa regularly saw for herself the renewed sense of ‘hope for the future’ that learning and education brought to those who had found themselves in a prison classroom.
Prior to that, Vanessa worked in an adult education centre in the South of England teaching Literacy and Numeracy to long-term unemployed adults, many of whom had faced barriers to employment because they had no recent qualifications, work experience or computer skills, something most of us take for granted.
Vanessa was a Trustee for a Community Education Centre in Brighton which reached out to the most isolated in its community with social activities and workshops aimed at bringing people together on a weekly basis. For some, this might have been the only human interaction they had in a week. This had a hugely positive impact on those it served, providing hope and choice to its users, which can ultimately mean a release from poverty and exclusion. The far-reaching effect of one person’s renewed sense of hope permeates through to their family and the community in which they reside.
